To be a successful rapper you need to have good diction IMO!

Music is subjective. Listen to people like Future, Playboi Carti, Lil Uzi Vert, honcho, many others I could name from this generation, the slang is a lot different from what you may expect, diction is not a priority in this era.

Similar thing happens in the UK drill scene, those guys don’t speak posh, they don’t talk the same as the queen, they’re not using absolute proper diction

There’s an argument to be made that you can get the same level of understanding across without needing proper diction, depending on where you are, proper diction can be seen as uppity, too sterile, too clean to some people

Rappers in the UK with good diction: Dave, Chip, EsDeeKid,Rico Ace and Wretch 32. Just of the top of my head. From the US: Doechii, 50 Cent, Mobb Deep, Nas, BIG, DMX, Jack Harlow, JZ, drake and Tupac . This is all so off the top of my head.

Slang and diction are two entirely separate things

I don’t think they’re entirely separate, the type of slang can impact the diction. The genre some improperly call mumble rap is a form of slang where people choose to combine words to create a certain kind of patter

Patois is a perfect example, many Jamaicans I know say it’s disrespectful to call that broken English because it’s evolved into its own language
