The scenario as he presented it would not make the male character sexist in my opinion. If the roles have been changed, and she had been the one unencumbered by Family etc. and he'd been the one with kids and a wife back home, I don't think anyone would say her reminding him of that in a moment of mortal danger would be sexist. I think it's what you do in any situation where somebody has more to live for than perhaps you do. I think it's honorable in a way. Blame it on the author for writing the woman as the one with the kids. She's the sexist one lol
