I don’t think they would remove any movies if they updated the list, they would just add to it. Like it was 100 movies for 100 years..they could make it 150 movies for 150 years or whatever..adding but not removing. Like with the NBA, professional basketball, they had a list of the top 50 players of all time to celebrate their 50 years of existance, that was in the late 90s, and they updated it to the top 75 in the 2020s, for 75 years and they didn’t remove any, they just added 25 more.

The American Film Institute (AFI) has not updated its "100 Years…100 Movies" list since the 10th Anniversary Edition in 2007, largely because the initiative was designed as a decade-long marketing campaign that concluded after the 100th anniversary of cinema passed. While often referred to as an "overdue update" by film fans, several factors contribute to why it has not been refreshed: Reddit Reddit +1 Completion of the 10-Year Project: The project began in 1998 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of cinema and was intended to be updated only once, ten years later, to reflect on the first century of film. Declining Interest in the Format: The original lists were accompanied by high-profile, three-hour CBS television specials that popularised them. As the 2000s progressed, interest in these televised countdowns declined. The "Test of Time" Factor: The AFI lists prioritize films that have "stood the test of time," creating a natural resistance to including newer, untested films, even though fans argue that post-2007 cinema has produced many contenders. Subjectivity and Criticism: The 2007 list faced criticism for a lack of diversity, heavy bias toward older studio films, and odd inclusions/exclusions. Reupdating the list would inevitably prompt further debate over which classics to remove to make room for modern films. Shift in Focus: The AFI has shifted its focus towards other initiatives, such as the AFI Awards, AFI Fest, and educational heritage, rather than maintaining an ongoing "best of all time" list. Reddit Reddit +4 The 2007 list remains the official, albeit outdated, AFI top 100. Fans and critics often note that modern classics like No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, or The Dark Knight—all released after the 2007 cutoff—are not represented.
