When you're just starting out, or if you've just sold your business, I recommend that you start in 30 minute shifts because as the coins come in and you're buying vehicles and upgrades, that one on foot courier isn't bringing in very many coins. The upgrades and vehicles you buy will not start working until the next shift. After you've built it up, then you can run much longer shifts.

Just remember that the field in settings for adding a code, and the teams network are totally different things. The code in the settings tab is to invite a friend to play the game with you, and when the code is entered, it gives lots of coins to give a head start to the player. But that system was made long before teams were ever introduced. Under teams, this is where you enter a person's team code, so you can join their team.
