Well, first and foremost, welcome to the club. I used the JAWS one a long time ago. And, to tell you the truth, placemarkers aren't all that necessary in my daily life. Therefore, I can't say how much of an equivalent result you will get in NVDA, but there is an NVDA add-on here by the same name the homepage of which is definitely worth checking at least once: https://github.com/nvdaes/placeMarkers

Thank you very much! Yes I've got the add on installed, but not sure how to actualy place placemarkers if that makes sense. The instructions I've found online are very confusing and do not work I'm afraid. I use Jaws as my main screen reader but have started learning NVDA too.

Well, in that case, you will have to give me some time to play around with both so that a distinction can be made between the two. If you don't have any problem with that, you can look into other aspects of NVDA in the meantime.
