Is there any discussion of making this recording and button thing easier for low-vision people? Not everyone in the blind community has transitioned to fully using their phones with just voiceover or talkback. So wondering if there's any thought to making this perhaps more friendly to low-vision users as well?

You know, that's a good question, one which, as a totally blind user myself, I've never given any thought to. Maybe you could drop a message to Josh, the dev and see what he thinks. He's known as Josh S here on the app. Dropping him a quick text message works better than an audio message, BTW. :) Thanks for that question.
