This has now been fixed. The text field is visible with no work-arounds.

Hi, two-finger-scrub will hide the keyboard and reveal the textfield. You can review the text and double tap the textfield to bring up the keyboard if you want to continue editing.

My only solution for this, and it's not a helpful one, is using a bluetooth keyboard. The text field shows up for me if I do that. But even then it reads the entire thing as one block of text where normally I'm able to go line by line.
