Instructor response: "I completely understand. This assignment is not mandatory at all. I will actually be deleting it because i just read their discussions on [platform name I did not recognize] about their discomfort around it. It’s a new book for me and I felt weird ignoring the chapter since it was in there. I will be more mindful next time." Translation: The class book is where the idea came from in this case, which means, it's not just the people running schools and classes, but the selection of materials and the very nature of materials available that govern what ends up in a class. Because of things like this, I strongly believe that parents of younger kids should be allowed to see, and govern application of, materials used in their children's classes, elementary and beyond.
