For me, blood meridian is a sui generis American masterpiece on a level with Moby Dick and Huck Finn. But I get that many people can’t read it because it’s so bloody.

The creepy theme of Lolita runs throughout Nabokov’s career, it’s just that nobody reads the lesser books because they’re not so amazingly well written. Very bizarre dude, he wrote in four different languages, so I guess his books are bound to be hit and miss

Regarding historical fiction, I just finished the series by Gore Vidal called narratives of Empire, and it was pretty fun.

Blood Meridian is fantastic but the rest of his books are pretty mediocre. I think the same can be said for Lolita and Nabokov
