guys. let me explain a few things here. This is not legal advice and Josh may not rely on it as such. For my credentials, I am a data privacy, tech and AI lawyer of 10 years' standing. I advise on data privacy issues for a top 20 UK-headquartered international law firm and work across 6 jurisdictions. Basically this is my day-to-day professional life. The points cited in the original post do not constitute GDPR violations, due to principles of proportionality when evaluating tech and org measures employed by the data controller. There is also the fact that the users have manifestly made a lot of this information public, so the articles 6 and 9 lawful grounds of consent/explicit consent are made out. Josh, I've sent you a WhatsApp so feel free to consult on this privately. But based on an initial glance, this is fearmongering and you would do well to just lock this thread.

Firstly, having an API does not violate the GDPR. YouTube has one, Mastodon has an API. Yawn. As for seeing your own direct messages, that’s what I would expect an API to do, show you your own direct messages. I feel like you spent 10 minutes explaining how an API works

This guy wasted literally 10 minutes describing that he can see his own profile through the API, which doesn’t violate the GDPR! He’s just trying to find anything to bash this app developer even though he says he’s not! I have no background insecurity, but I double checked and researched this and just because you get access to your own profile meaning showing dates and times of you posting and friending other people are following others on this app doesn’t violate the GDP are because you’re not having Access whatsoever to private information or private messages between users or any descriptive information that could give away a users, personal information.

This post is wrong in many ways and can be explained pretty easily. Nobodys private messages, emails, or other "private" information is never shared. Public info, such as profiles, followers/following, rambles, etc that can be accessed within the application can be accessed via an API that the application uses. The website and app gives you the same info as the API does.
