International Women’s Day originated in the early 20th century, rooted in the labor movements of North America and Europe. The idea was first proposed by Clara Zetkin, a German socialist and women's rights activist, in 1910 at the International Socialist Women’s Conference. The goal was to promote equal rights, including suffrage for women. The first official International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 19, 1911, in several European countries including Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland. Women demanded the right to vote, work, and hold public office, as well as an end to discrimination. March 8 became the fixed date for International Women’s Day in 1921, marking a significant moment as it recognized women’s role in the Russian Revolution and their broader contributions to society. Since then, the day has grown globally, embraced by various nations and organizations to highlight women’s achievements, advocate for gender equality, and address ongoing challenges such as violence, poverty, and discrimination against women. Today, International Women’s Day is observed worldwide with themes that change annually, focusing on issues from equal pay to women's leadership and human rights, fostering awareness and action toward a more equitable world.
