I have actually, I was stuck in Colorado airport, my flight had been cancelled, and Assistance was nowhere to be found. I made a deal with a very confused French family, I would help them go and rebook, and deal with all of me related admin, if they could then just help me through the airport and out to where I need to go afterwards. Translators unite!
I speak Aymara, Spanish, English, some Portuguese, and I’m currently learning Russian and quechua. There are a couple of situations I can think of where languages really came in handy. The first one was when a pair of tourists from the US got lost here in Bolivia and were trying to find the market. I gave them directions, and to my surprise, they paid me for helping them. I definitely wasn’t expecting that. The second situation happened when a tourist was trying to ask a woman making anticuchos to skewer the meat again so he could see the flames. She wasn’t understanding him at all. I translated from English to Aymara and, once again, got paid for it. But not only that, he actually ended up hiring me as his interpreter for a couple of other things he needed to do.
