You might enjoy reading The Country of the Blind by Andrew Leland. It's written by the author, and is about his transition to blindness, (he has RP), and how he familiarized himself with blindness and the blind community.

Yes they only present one specific way of being blind and one way of feeling about blindness. They have little basis in reality unless you drink lots of cool-aid. There is a lot more to blindness and life than what those books present. It's worst for newly blinded individuals and parents of blind children who encounter these as a first introduction to blind people.

Grace, what materials, if any, do you recommend people start off by reading?

I think the best book I read was called The by Jeanette Ingold. Mandy is 15 and goes blind in a car crash that kills her mother. It's a very real feeling account of adjusting to being blind in a mainstream setting. It's not all positive but neither is it all doom and gloom either. Other than that, actually experienceing the world and interacting with lots of diverse blind people is the best way to learn.
