yes you can do this. Plug in your headphones, and then under the sound settings, you set the computer speakers as difolt play back device. Then, if your on NVDA? under settings, prefrences, and audio, you can change the output, and if you set that to your headphones, you should have it working the way you want.

For software that is autonomous in choosing its own input/output and can remember the preference, it should be done directly from within the software itself. Windows has a tiny virtual mixer under Settings > System > Sound. I know choosing the preferred audio source for a specific software from there over and over again will be a bit impractical. This is where I'll give a huge shoutout to NVDA's "Audio Manager" (version 1.0.9). Give that a try, and whenever you get stuck, give me a shout.
