So the reason why it is called a book of shadows, is because, in the past, when witches were persecuted, they had to keep their magic, and their traditions, a secret, bad to keep things hidden. There’s both a private book of shadows, which was used for solitary practitioners, and there is a group book of shadows, which was, and is, often created in covens, and circles, where each member would contribute to the book. I came across something a while back, or someone has something called a book of mirrors, which seems like a book of reflections, perhaps some meditations, or, reflecting on certain spiritual experiences the person has had. I’ve only seen it talked about once, so I don’t exactly know what it actually is, but it’s probably their version of a book shadows, they just used a different name, and chose what resonated with them, and their practice.  I apologise for dictation not cooperating. In the beginning of my comment that was supposed to say, they had to keep things hidden. And book shadows, was supposed to be, book of shadows.
