The Cher song was Believe. It was really cool how that turned out, but she certainly didn't need it. I loved the effects producers used at one time, because they knew how to use just enough and no more.

At Jo Billard she definitely didn't need it for that song but I thought it was a cool effect. And I agree, even if those tools were available before producers knew how to use it sparingly and at the right moment and not excessively like now.

@Leo Lizard Man I didn't know the story of The Monkees until now, but it turns out that they transsubstantiated themselves from a deliberately fictional concept into a real performing band starting in 1967 when I was born. I am amused at the timing.

Ok, well, I’m usually rough on some of the details and more detail-orientated people than me will always catch me out on one or several things, but my point still stands. I mean, Spinal Tap became a real band and went on the “Break The Wind” tour also.

I don't understand how Tiffany's voice was processed. What did they do? She sounded real enough to me.

At Jo Billard my guess is that back then they used audio processing more sparingly and only when needed. Because even if there was processing used there was still emotion behind the performances. While now they're just so concentrated on getting your vocals to be exactly on pitch that they do it excessively and don't think about the emotion anymore. They are definitely doing something different now, which is crazy because now technology is so much more advanced that things should sound better instead of more robotic. It also depends on what producer or engineer you use, the ones who are interested in still conserving your emotions work harder to use this processing in a way that won't ruin the emotion of the performance. But it involves a lot of work, and usually the industry just wants to chop chop and Work quickly, so they take it, process it completely and don't worry too much about the results.
