I’ve been playing virtual chess for awhile, but before that I played a lot of games in person on a tactile chessboard and that really helped me to understand where each piece was and how they move through space and visualise my moves in advance, I’m sure there are people who have done it just purely from online play but I wouldn’t have been able to had I not had that experience.

If you can get a tactile chessboard it makes it much easier because you can feel where the pieces are to remind you without accidentally moving them, they are pegged to the board.

I don’t think it matters how good you are as long as you can find people to play who are on your level or a little bit better to challenge you. It’s a fun game

Lichess is it good free website for chess, and it has an accessibility mode feature. But I haven’t used it enough to know whether to recommend it. That website also has different chest variations and an engine you can play against
