Nah, what I've tried is the website on the PC, and I've tried the app on iOS and Android. But to answer your question, no, you do not have to sign in to read rambles on the home feed, but people can choose not to show their rambles on the home feed to signed out or guest users, so yes, your theory is correct, you can choose to hide your rambles to signed out users.
