During online meetings, optional camera on or off?

This is a very good question. I would say optional camera off because I’m camera shy and I really don’t like the pressure of always having to look good for a meeting and the meetings I attend are mostly personal and health related not business. And I just like not having to have the pressure although I can see why you would want to for some business meetings you know? But I really would prefer to keep my camera off because I’m not always the most confident in how I look to strangers since I’m so used to going out with family and others who are just like here’s how you should look. And unlike people who are trained to help the blind, cited people can judge more easily.
I did have an incident where it turned out the cameras weren’t optional, but I thought they were going to do it in a different structure and before I knew it was happening they said you have one more chance to turn on your cameras and that’s it and I didn’t get there on time it was to me kind of a personal meeting and I was brushing my teeth and just enjoying things and they kicked me out. Not proud of it but also like show some gray guys please I’m not a troll or anything. Don’t just kick me out. Thank you.

I would have my camera off if it’s an optional meeting, sometimes it’s not specified whether it’s going to be optional though, so I will dress up like I’m leaving the house or going to meet people out in public if it’s somebody knew because I have had the case where I get into a meeting and they ask me if I could please turn my camera on.

Off as much as possible. Sometimes I have to have it on for work but I try even then to have it off whenever I can. Luckily it hasn’t been forced on me to much but I would politely ignore it to be honest unless it became impossible.

Thank you everyone for your response so far, as I said in my post, I don’t mind having the camera on, however sometime in a long meeting you can forget and also if you are not wearing headphones sometime, your screen readers can distract you when you are trying to toggle it on or off there is another issue I faced, so would set it off to start with and keep it like that for the whole duration.
