Well back in those days parents were at a great disadvantage. They have a child that ends up being blind and they know nothing about what to do, nor do they have resources that they can tap into to learn what to do. The local school district would tell them about the blind school and they would call the blind school and they would make it sound like it was the greatest place in the world for blind students to be. The blind school would tell them how hard it was going to be on them to drop their kids off and leave them but it was for their own good. So parents actually thought that they were doing the right thing. So once they drop their children off at the blind school they were automatically disconnected from their everyday life. One short phone call every week an occasional visit home for the holidays, maybe a quick visit down on a Sunday afternoon to go see them but that was it. And the parents were programmed to believe that they were doing the right thing. By the time the parents could really see the results of their actions it was too late. Once their child aged out of the blind school that was it the blind school was just done with them. They made their money now goodbye and head on down the road. And that's pretty much the story of so many blind students. Some were able to overcome the blind school and become successful, some or not. The late 1970s and 1980s were the worst because that's when the blind school really started to slack off on academics. If he would've been there in the 50s and 60s like Ronnie Milsap was, you would've walked out of there with a pretty well rounded education and you were ready for college.
