  Probably nothing to do with your badass pc and more to do with speech-dispatcher or pulseaudio or pipewire getting weird. I would run a regular terminal with the Fenrir screen-reader and see if it works. You can also ssh into your vm and mess around restart speech-dispatcher etc see if that works if you are comfortable.
