Thank you this is a brilliant post. Keep these kinds of posts coming. This is what we need 😊

I didn't know about the Raspberry 400 and 500. I'm always keeping my ears open for alternative methods of portable and lightweight computing, besides phones, Beelinks with power bricks, etc.

It does not have a battery. She is still need to plug it in however it is about the size of a mini keyboard so I think it’ll be enjoyable. I do not have it yet should arrive on the 9th

My research says you'll need a sound device because it doesn't come with one, and it uses a Micro SD card for OS and file storage. Interesting idea though. There's some sort of large port on the back that people use for electronics experimentation apparently.

It has a headphone jack and Bluetooth

And also, there are battery packs available for use with them. Sold separately obviously.

Interesting. Both attempts at checking for a headphone jack told me that the keyboards do not have one because they needed to streamline the back panel design, even though normal Raspberries do have a jack.

Correction, you are right. I just looked it up. Myself, audio would come through a mini HDMI display, USB or Bluetooth

I think Wayland will take over but X may survive for a while, just in smaller and smaller spaces with less and less support. That's a guess, but one I live by.

I mean x libre is also a thing

For me personally, my biggest issue with Waylon currently is the lack of support for mouse click emulations. I have read that is something they have on the roadmap, but no idea what the timeline is.

I mean, Lennox meant mate works perfectly fine with X 11 raspberry pie OS is wayland unfortunately, so we’ll see how that goes once I get it on Friday if I can get everything loaded correctly and what it does. My Bantu system is wayland but I don’t really notice any problems with it anymore

What did you find interesting there

Oh it's just a cool summary of what might be needed if I ever got a device like that. But I don't have one now, so I would have bookmarked it just in case I get one later.

The 400 was $80 or was it 90 from an independent seller on Walmart, then I happen to have a USB-C to c cable lying around to plug it in and then I happen to have the right brick for it, and then the microSD card was like $30, the storage drive was another $30 and then I had a cable lying around for CDA to plug in the SSD and then the micro HDMI adapter was a few bucks and then I plugged in the HDMI cable, but you really don’t need that once you get everything set up. I believe if you go through a micro center, then the 500 which is way better is like 230 something but I’d still recommend buying an SSD

I haven't heard of Mate being phased out, but I did avoid it so I could learn how to handle Wayland since it seems to be taking over and replacing XOrg now. LXQt is rumored to have gained much accessibility support lately, so I am starting to pay more attention to that as well. I run Gnome but would consider a smaller-footprint replacement for my next Linux box, since graphics are more of a necessary evil than a desire over here.

Starting to like the idea of replacing a laptop with a mini and power pack to avoid the size of a screen. But I haven't actually done that yet.

Definitely been an interesting thread to follow. I would definitely be interested in what information or issues you have come across related to the gnome project. I certainly haven’t heard or read anything about those type of issues myself. Gnome is pretty much the de that I use almost universally. I have been following cosmic from system 76 since the beginning. And although, they have certainly had accessibility improvement in the forefront from early on, those seem to be strictly confined to visual accessibility improvements for magnification, and high contrast, etc. The last thing I have ever seen related to screen reader support was an issue raised in Github probably close to two or three years ago now. Hopefully it will happen someday, but doesn’t appear anytime soon.

Actually, cosmic has done accessibility, but it’s projected to be completed in 2028 in terms of orca accessibility. When it comes to the gnome foundation, it’s not an issue with an accessibility, it’s issue of trying to keep their administrative staff. So it’s just more of a general issue with just controversy is politically within gnome.

Also, some of the other issues with the gnome foundation is just that presided people know is less popular than using window managers or KDE plasma.

As for the old equipment question. I’m still one of those old school guys that will always have my primary driver being a desktop. And then I do of course have a dual boot higher end laptop for travel purposes. Beyond that, might go to process for older equipment that I either acquire, or in a lot of cases, have given to me, is just to get it in my possession, document it’s hardware, look for any cheap possible upgrade lanes, and then just see what can be installed on it and if I have a used case for it. For super old hardware, I usually have went the headless route and found a server use case for those pieces of equipment.

Small update, tried to do both Luban to as well as raspberry on X 86. The installer is not accessible, so it looks like I will only be using LQT on my raspberry pie and that’ll be it. So it looks like May will be my official distro on all other PC based machines for now. I may also try XFCE
