Ah, I did not realize Ronan blocked you. I filed this comment on that thread. The final part is still true; these are thoughts, not an attack; sometimes tone is lost in texting. :) Why are people pushing an author to open-source a project instead of enjoying the ability to use the program for free? I grant that inspection of code is sometimes of value; but also, we learn who to trust by what they do, with or without source. I've put out both open-source and closed-source projects over the last 35 years or so myself. Authors can make choices about what they do. Users can choose to use it or not. Users pushing volunteer authors is usually a losing proposition I think. As for Josh Kenedy, I've watched him poke fun at major icons of the NVDA community like Joseph Lee, which did not serve to make me respect Mr. Kenedy much even though I don't know him personally. These are just thoughts of mine; I'm not angry or even keyed up over here, just a bit surprised at the tone of this conversation.

That guy took what originally was an NVDA addon using the WASM TTS engine, found a native library that does not rely on having specific browsers installed, and instead of contributing back he's deciding to keep it as a proprietary thing basically saying fuck you to the original people who made the base project.

For anyone landing here without seeing the thread that inspired this one: Josh Kenedy was metntioned a lot over there. What I've seen was on public mailing lists for NVDA.

Am I right that Ronan's product is an app and not an NVDA add-on, or does it consist of or include an NVDA add-on?

Yeah Josh Kennedy was very active on that mailing list, he made multiple synths available for SAPI, but someone else did the original Google TTS for NVDA thing. Now Ronan seems to have took that and made a native thing.

The source code for an NVDA add-on that interacts with NVDA itself from within the NVDA process must be open-sourced because it falls under GNU version 2 along with NVDA itself. Does Ronan's product violate that requirement?

I think it does, and in that case his Samsung TTS project also violates that as it too is not open source, and that includes an addon. Wow we've caught him not only not doing research into how open source works, but also failing to comply with requirements for NVDA addons.

I'll just go make sure that fine point is not missed in the original thread. The requirement does not insist that all code be open, just what NVDA loads into itself as an add-on.

My comment there on this, then I'll likely stop double-posting lol. And I really did start saying this before I saw your thread. The other half my comment, which I started then got sidetracked from lol: For an independent application, the author can choose the license and thus the distribution terms, or even write an original license lol. There is a slight uniqueness for NVDA add-ons though: The code that NVDA loads into itself as an add-on is covered by GNU version 2, and thus must include published source code. I once had to convince a major telecommunications company of that one when I was contracted to write an add-on actually; only time I was ever paid to write NVDA code. In any case, if your product is just an app, you can pick what to include. If your product is an add-on or includes one though, you do have to open-source the code that NVDA runs.

This isn't just for validation, this is calling out some guy who is acting childish, like he had no reason to block me, sometimes I feel the block button gets abused lmao.

Oh I wouldn't be surprised if NV Access eventually get wind of this, I mentioned it on Mastodon as well and they have a presence there.
