Try Pocket Casts. It works on iOS as well as almost any operating system you could imagine that most people use. If you create an account, free or not, you can continue listening to podcasts on other devices that you have installed the program on.

I’ve definitely tried a bunch of them, including pocket cast, overcast, and Castro. But the one I always seem to come back to is Castamatic. I can’t say much about its recommendation options, as that is not a particular use case for me. But I really find it powerful and feature rich with a pretty simple interface at the same time. It might be worth a shot for you.
