I think both of us have done a good job of representing the complexities of adding in this feature. Ultimately, it is up to Josh how he wants to move forward with it and how much he is willing/is able to put into it right now. There are quick and easy solutions that rely on users' technical knowhow and tools in their toolkits and there are solutions that are more difficult but that would more intuitively encourage transcription inclusion and futureproof the app.

Right, but Josh is one guy, and I assume the app is bootstrapped. There are multiple, hugely popular IOS apps that don’t allow alt text at all, or any form of transcriptions for audio. Even TIk Tok only added transcripts like a few months ago. So I think the legal risk is pretty much zero. So that said, I think the most important thing is that the foundation of transcription gets built in, even to the pre-release app. Built in AI etc can be added later. But if we start with a text box, then add the ability to share recordings for transcription, then later add premium AI, Josh could at least move forward and make steady progress. As a single developer, I’m sure he has a trillion things that need to be done. Like user moderation, copyright enforcement, some sort of billing system, and so on. If Josh was a team with VC funding, I would absolutely agree with everything you’re saying. But he isn’t.

I care a lot less about the legal aspects than I do about making it practical for Josh to implement, without a paywall, while respecting legal privacy. In the EU, for example, you can’t send someone’s voice to an AI without their permission. Hence my idea for a box and a share sheet.

Mellissa: sighted people find alt text and audio descriptions annoying. Guess we shouldn’t have those! And I don’t like dogs; keep your guide dog out of my cab. And audible traffic lights are annoyingly loud. Get rid of them! Same for announcements of stops on the bus, and elevators saying the floor all the time. Also braille is ugly: get rid of it!

Maybe start with a transcription edit box. On iPhone and supported Android platforms have an auto transcription button that could fill it in. But at least it’s always available to be filled in on all platforms. Or maybe a place in settings where folks could fill in an openrouter api key. The ability to share preview recordings with another app would also work; people could let another app transcribe it, then copy and paste the transcription into the box. Also if it was an edit field people could just briefly describe stuff like soundscapes and music that can’t be transcribed.

Hi there. How would you see this working? I understand the iPhone may have local transcription, but not all platforms do; more so on Android, they have so many device types and such. I believe we can do it our end, but this would add costs that we probably couldn't pick up at the moment. If you have any suggestions, I am open to it for sure.
