It’s a huge problem that has nothing to do with vinyl records or plastic. Activist to are fighting for their communities to be free of this massive problem are not just complainers. They are the reason why problems in the past have been resolved, to the extent that they have been. I don’t believe you have really looked at the problem enough to know what a threat it is. But good luck out there

Hey Dan. I am no expert and I don’t have anybody in my life. Who’s suffering from that so of course I don’t know that is a huge problem. I used to complain about things like this as if they were a problem that I was experiencing. Sort of taking stuff that other people said and just using it to win an argument. But I’m realizing that I was wrong when I did that because I didn’t actually know anybody who was dealing with it. And I decided that to be an activist in my own life I needed to be an activist about things that actually affect me.

I don’t even know where to begin… Trees growing and eating food like avocados or whatever is in no way the same as destroying the water supply for millions of people so that we can have a more massive surveillance machine. Nobody’s coming for your AI slop or your smart camera or your assistive technology, we’re just asking you to pay a little bit of attention to the environmental damage that something on this scale will create. These are not the same data forms that we’ve been using for the past 20 or 30 years to store our banking data. They are being forced on people across the country without their consent by local governments who signed contracts secretly because they are paid by these huge corporations. They know how unpopular this is which is why they do this secretly. I’m so glad that people are starting to get together to fight against it despite the whiners among us

Hey weird James, I appreciate that but just because it hasn’t happened to you yet, or affected you yet, is not really a logical excuse. Also, I would argue it has affected all of us and will continue to do so considering what these massive data farms are being used for already.

People are not organizing to fight against these massive takeovers in their community for no reason. In many communities the choices between trees and farms versus the data centers. It’s not just running out of water it’s massive tax giveaways and land grabs. In some places the choices becoming a choice between things like avocados and Willow trees or data centers.

Replying to @Dan: I don’t even know where to begin… Trees growing and eating food like avocados orYou know, Dan, something I found wild is, An average, fluffy, fair-weather cumulus cloud (about 1 km across) holds roughly 130,000 to 140,000 gallons of water and weighs around 1.1 million pounds. That's about 500 metric tons of pure H2O just casually drifting overhead without contributing a drop to the local municipal water supplyz, someone should do something about that.

I will try and keep the short. Seems to be there are multiple questions being referenced around a huge multifaceted topic. I’ll quickly break down how I see it. My viewpoint on AI is, it has some use cases. I actually don’t think it is the world changing technology that the tech companies themselves have been marketing. But it has its use cases. My problem with the data center question is not solely ecological, although that is definitely an unknown concern at this point. My issue is that all of this build out seems more about an arms race all based on projected promises rather than any level of detailed and supported data. They just keep saying we are going to need all of this build out without any specific stated products or use cases. So they are spending billions upon billions of dollars of investment,, soaking up huge areas of land, water sources, not to mention literally terra watts of energy, which nobody knows whether our power grid can support it or not,. And all of this seemingly for a product that they are saying will change everything, and yet every pole question shows that the vast majority of people don’t want. The logic of this is what trips up my brain.
