This same thing happened to me multiple times months ago when I first joined. Always when I was trying to start recording an audio comment on my phone, I would tap on record audio message and accidentally find myself either in what I think was a list of hangouts I could try to join, or in an active hangout. It hasn't happened in a while, though.
