Yeah, it's not a good experience on the phone, but if you have windows, you can also use telegram from an app called Unigram. You should be able to find that from the Microsoft store. I found it to be pretty usable without major issues. Also, if someone has your contact saved on their phone and they use telegram, it'll notify them of your joining when you create an account for the first time.
