Counterpoint: There’s a difference between taking advantage of adaptive technology like smart camera apps and embracing what AI is doing to our country right now, including automating the degradation of our social services, surveillance and imprisonment, and even automating our genocide around the world, not to mention poisoning our environment, diverting our sources of water, increasing our utility bills and creating Energy blackouts, as well as creating an economic bubble much larger than that of 2008 which will eventually burst and destroy our economy.

The reports are already coming in about how AI destroys critical faculties, psychological and developmental atrophy, and they are forcing it on us, including on the children in schools right now. It’s not profitable so the taxpayers are going to subsidize it through government contracts for service and free energy for data centers , which is another issue.

The White House has published new guidelines for who will be considered a terrorist, and it includes anyone who opposes data centers for AI. It has also relaxed the regulations so that Silicon Valley tech corporations are able to build their own nuclear power plants now. Lol What could possibly go wrong?

I just read an article today on zero hedge. Last month original first time jobless claims the lowest they've been since 1969. So where is this AI replacing humanity. also many companies are stepping back from AI because it is so expensive.

No I think the studies are more or less unanimous about cognitive decline. But again, I’m not talking about assistive technology services. It’s such a small part of what the LLM’s do that I think it’s disingenuous to talk about it’s effects on humanity by emphasizing it’s benefits as adaptive technology. I think there’s also a larger conversation here to be had about how disability has been used by Silicon Valley to justify the implementation of new technology without concern for ethics or the law.

You brought up confirmation bias, and that is actually one of the big problems being discovered with the use of large language models, or chat bots. It was even parodied on South Park about a year ago.

Lord London, I think there are definitely two separate problems that you are bringing up. One is the automation of the digital cage which AI has been enabling. This is actually an extremely big deal that has nothing to do with individual use of large language models. But the other problem is the cognitive decline that comes from outsourcing your intellect to the chat Bot.

Just to address the second point, the point of learning how to write a novel or a symphony or learning to code is to do just that. Not to learn how to outsource it to the machine. This is a very basic example of how critical thinking is under attack the idea is that once large language models can be deployed at taxpayers expense there will be two types of users: the people who tell AI what to do, and the people who AI tells what to do. Which one are you?

A fellow traveler: talking to the corporate chat Bot is not like talking to the “collective consciousness“ as you say. It is a corporate product tailored to the interest of the very powerful corporations and their owners, a censorship machine. Please do not mistake it for human consciousness or collective consciousness. I think you are also falling into the trap of believing that any technology beneficial to people with this abilities must be beneficial overall regardless of whether it is regulated or not. This technology is being forced on children even though the people who own the technology do not let their own children use it.

We’ve already been through this type of scenario previously, with the social media apps 20 years ago, that limited access to the Internet and created psychological manipulation of their users. This is not new. There are court cases going on right now about how Meta and Instagram, for example, have been manipulating children psychologically to bolster engagement and experiment psychologically on the population. The big example going on in the courts right now involves Instagram manipulating young girls over their body image in order to increase engagement and sell ads. There needs to be big government regulation over this stuff and it does not need to involve taking away your ability to use a smart camera or to make a music video. we are mandating the use of AI in public schools despite reports saying it destroys cognitive development. Rich kids in private schools will not be subject to this authority mind you.

In terms of my collective consciousness statement, that was metaphorical. I say it because you are kind of talking to the totality of the Internet but you can also be right about the filters that these large corporations would put over that. I certainly don't trust any of these companies completely, but right now OpenAI is certainly the one I would trust the least with their recent integration of advertising as well as working with the Trump administration. But to say that AI just causes cognitive decline just isn't true. It's all in how you use it. I very often use it like I used to use Google back in the day, to do research because Google sucks. And then I go and I independently verify things while already having the platform of that information to work from. There's no question that AI is shifting our landscape but I think it's disingenuous to say that it's all positive or all negative. Also it's possible to see the positives in AI while also agreeing with your points that government regulation should be mandatory. So in short, I actually totally agree with you. But there's also no question that AI is game changing in a lot of ways in terms of accessibility. For example, I have a friend who is visually impaired, who is also an avid gamer, and now because of AI, and the fact that he has a fundamental understanding of development, he's able to create mods for games that are otherwise in accessible. At first you might say, OK video games are being made accessible who cares, but the fact is, making a video game accessible, Ware you're navigating a virtual world, is really kind of hanging out on the frontier of the evolution of real world accessibility. Now sure, video game accessibility is kind of separate from the idea of AI being positive or negative, but he literally, because of AI, is able to take control of his own world, breakdown those barriers to access, and then offer that to others. it's all about balanc and nuance.

The reason Google sucks now is the reason AI will suck in the future. I appreciate having this conversation and I hope we can continue. Again, I do not think that the benefits to the disability community should make the disability community OK with the massive destruction that this new technology is wreaking on all of us.
