How are people sharing audio files here?

You do it from within the audio app you want to share from, and you use the share sheet like you would sending audio to any other app.

I did this with voice memos and it said file type not supported though?

You can use a third-party app to convert your files to m'p3 or wav, and you will be able to upload your audios.

I don’t think the issue is with the M4 a audio files? I did upload two of them today. And didn’t encounter any issues. What I have done basically is saving the audio files into my Files app. Then sharing them directly into Ramblio.
