So much concerning employment is about chance, my first job out of high school was working for an ophthalmologist scanning visual field tests on paper to a tape backup for storage in the late 80s yet I could not get a job at McDonalds because I was a liability. Got a job with a friends recommendation later working for a small company doing spreadsheets in Lotus / DOS, brought my own screen reading software etc. After college I sent out hundreds of resumes for months and went to job fairs always disclosing my visual impairment because I figured if they have issues I don’t want to be with them anyway. Then a chance meeting between my mom and a former commission for the Blind employee got me the chance to work 90 days for free and then the potential to get hired and I took it and here I am 30 years later. If the government reduction in force happens and I’m let go most likely I will just retire because it is just so hard to start over and prove yourself. Unless my family, wife and kids are struggling.

Thank you was kind of beginning to think I couldn’t. Despite people‘s loss if they don’t like me etc. on here. I need a safe space but people say no is safe so I don’t know. Anyway what is a diversity higher? Never heard of it.

Tiffany, what are categories 2 and 3? I’ve heard of Schedule A but not those categories. Meg, don’t worry about what others think of you, be yourself.

I was the same way… Entering into college I just never figured out how people could go to work from 9 to 5 and not like it because they either were really good at pretending or I couldn’t figure out how they couldn’t have the routine around their work. Then I started working and thinking seriously about it and it was just like could I really do this all day from 9 o’clock in the morning until 5 o’clock in the afternoon. Yes if I really push myself I could, but it just wasn’t something I wanted to do. I do think if my parents hadn’t pushed me to find my passion and do more than think about just working at McDonald’s then I would’ve been fine but the fact is that I don’t really mind working anywhere if I’m hired and love what I do. Even if it’s McDonald’s, even if the myth goes around that I’m not living to my full work potential.

On the other hand, it’s like what if I’m working at McDonald’s and a music teaching position comes along if I can’t quit the McDonald’s job then I feel stuck, but I always thought I could quit later for a better job. I mean, I was trying to be practical about all of it.
