Have you ever gone chasing validation?

I don't really care about validation. Whether people love me or hate me. I believe that makes some people uncomfortable. if I spent all my time, wondering why people didn't like me then I feel like I would be more worn out. Pick and choose your own battles.

I think at it’s heart, validation is just the desire to know that we exist in other peoples minds, that other people are thinking about us and that we have an effect outside of our own awareness. I’m mainly post here because well I’ve started something now with the audio mo challenge and I kind of feel obligated to finish it and also because I don’t always know what I think, have some rough ideas but it’s actually Speaking about them and receiving other peoples comments that shape them into something that I find more usable. But it must be particularly challenging for musicians and songwriters whove spent a lot of time working on pieces hoping to get an interesting response to then be left with nothing, but I do think that more popular songs will get more reactions, you’re much more likely to get feedback on a Frankie Valli song than a noa khans one.

It's so interesting that you say that about comparing popularity of music, Calum. When I started my YouTube channel, I was so interested in posting covers of songs everyone else was also covering. Popular music,, whether old or new, will always gain more traction. And it was only when I went to university and was out of the sphere of influence of all my classmates and didn't keep up with mainstream media anymore that I realized that covering what everyone else was also covering just did not make me happy. It's hard trying to balance authenticity with appeal. I think in a lot of ways it's better for me to be true to what I love than to post that which everyone else hopes I will or thinks I should. But that comes at a price and I suppose I need to decide what I can live with in that regard.

Yes, I guess it depends why you sing, if it’s to be true to yourself then you should cover what makes you happy, I’m sure your YouTube channel has a few people who come back for every single cover you do. But if it’s to communicate with people Then singing what’s popular will allow you to reach out to more people, its the difference between beingg an artist and a performer though most people do a bit of both .

It’s human nature to want validation. Everyone wants to be seen. I personally don’t care about it on social media or online, but I get it from my family, close friends and acquaintances. The world and society as a whole gives value to everything though, a food review, movie review, song review and Uber review, etc. As far as posts on here, for engagement it’s not always easy to interact with a song beyond “that was great, good singing, you are very talented” and what not, but I do try to at least put a thumbs up when I listen to something on here. Ultimately however u get validation whether online, in person or both, the importance is to know you are valued and valuable regardless of who says it or not.

@daisy: well it’s interesting what you mentioned about niches because my most commented post ever was about kink, and I’m not talking about the band that sang Lola either, and I had thought that that would be quite a niche topic but it ended up sparking a lot of awesome conversation which made me really pleased I posted it, and I feel I can take either one of two lessons from that. Either you really don’t know what will be popular online, particularly with social media you can never predict the algorithm and what it will throw up next or if you want people to comment on your post, just talk about sex.

@Calum I think the lesson is the second one lol. Always gets people talking, for better or worse.
