Hubert: My partner is in Brum, so that's my ideal place to end up. I have many friends in the West midlands now. My favourite place in the UK is Ely in Cambridgeshire.

Very nice, I’ve been to Birmingham quite a few times, Cambridgeshire is also lovely, I live in that geographical region but not in Cambridgeshire

Now for my question, do you think the language you speak influences the way you think?

French Estell sounds fun. somewhat related question, do you find it easier to express your thoughts and feelings in one language over another.

Not particularly, although I think the closer to native fluency you get, the more nuanced this answer would be. It just isn't in my case because I consume so much more English than Afrikaans, which is my other fluent language. What I will say though, is that — in all my languages — I find it miles easier to write than to speak. Even English. I'm a lot more eloquent with written content.

Hah. For some reason, always pictured you as being around my height. Very much not the case. Lol! You'd tower over me! That's hilarious

Manjunath: I'm a native English speaker. I learnt Afrikaans when I was 5, German and Spanish I learnt simultaneously at university, and French I've picked up afterwards. Yes, I have many Afrikaans-speaking friends, and definitely have friends who speak the other 3 languages, though in all cases, we usually speak English anyway. Languages are not like complicated maths formulas. It's not like you can completely unlearn them. There's evidence to show that linguistic lexicons take up different parts of your brain, so the capacity you have for one language, e.g. English, isn't going to be decreased because you learn Hindi. I don't speak all 5 every day, or even every week. They're all at different levels all the time. But I can't magically unlearn them. I spent 3 years doing Spanish. While it is by far my worst language now, I know that it would take me a couple weeks of focused work, and I'd be mostly okay again. I've almost always travelled alone. The first time I flew by myself for any reason, I was 15, and I flew to the US. I enjoy traveling with or without other people. It is one thing in this world that doesn't make me all that nervous.

Hi Estelle, what is your earliest musical memory?
Loading reactions…
Oh this is a good one!!! Wow. There was this South African song that would come on the radio often when my parents were listening on a weekend afternoon. My brother and I loved it so much. We would run full tilt into the living room and just dance around to it. (At least, this is how I remember it playing out). If making music, probably playing my recorder when I was about 6 and struggling with the lower notes because my hands were neither strong enough nor big enough to cover the holes properly. I got so frustrated with myself.
