Not necessarily hate the word itself, but I am allergic to some who use that word as a way to say, "You should be worse than you are.".

"Special" was used to mean unique or of extra worth, but has more recently also been used to mean different in a bad way. I think the newer usage is slang, but it does happen. That usage is what this post is about I'm sure. Sometimes if someone says, "Oh he's special," it means "Oh he is just different, just accept that he won't make sense," or similar.

Actually I made a mistake: I missed that the last question was from the same person that made the post lol. So I'm not sure if the slang meaning I mentioned is what you were originally asking about.

If I can give you an example of how some people displease me with the word "special"... I was a pianist in a concert. Then when it came time for me to play, I started to hear people going "Wow! This is so special.", or, "She's so inspiring.". The thing is, compared to other musicians (sighted) in that concert, I was just among them, and I was not above them by any means, so if I was labelled as special, it means people thought I couldn't even graduate college to begin with. Brief background about me: I'm a classical pianist, and I compose a little. I'm blind, but I'm not on life support to a point to be called "special" according to them.

To both of you: Ah yes, John, I corrected myself on realizing you were likely talking about the use of "special" that means "amazing" but without really addressing comparative skill level. That one implies that we are amazing for just getting to the event, for example. My response to that one is usually to try to find a way to educate the person by example, though of course there's a fine line there between, "See, I can do this," and, "Hold my beer and watch this!" lol. In short, I find the best strategy for handling people who think I'm special just for showing up is to concentrate on what I can do and not on what they see, until perhaps that will cause them to see better. I'll give an audio example from my professional experience next.

Today's special is a special on using the word "special," especially in especially special ways. Hehehehe, sorry I had to.
