hi there, I am new. Strangely, I had the same perception as you, and this is a nice platform though. I like the idea of this social media.

I have started to think that user and display name regulation might be a good thing because it prevents what I call blind-siding; but my opinion on this is not set in stone yet. The reason I finally consider the trend ridiculous is that, by now, it is willfully flying in the face of reasonable cultural expectations that exist outside of the UK, which is in effect a blatant and wilful disregard for other people and their norms. Initially that is not what this was; but by now, in effect and for some even in intent, it just is.

I agree, this has gone too far. It's disrespectful and there's no way to filter it out. I won't be leaving, though, as I've made some nice friends here and I really like the ability to do soundscapes here.

I think as long as humanity has been around, there have always been people who have done things and other people who have taken offence to those things, the people who do those things feel they have a valid reason to do so and the people who take offense feel they have valid reasons to take offence and so it’s just a never-ending cycle.

True, which is why I try to take intention into account. These days, there are both wilful victiming, to coin a phrase, and wilful offending. What we have here is a group of people who push the trend because they want to prove it to be ok to do so, and a group of people who are offended by the trend because of how they were brought up and what their cultural norms are. I defend the victim side this time because I see no purpose for the offending side other than to prove they can do it, whereas the victim side is merely showing natural reaction to it being done.

The thing is that I don’t have a problem with people opposing the trend and blocking whoever they want and explaining why they don’t like it, but where I do feel it crosses the line is when they ask the developer to step in in some way because here’s the thing, I do strongly believe in freedom of speech and I think that if the developer did start to ban individuals for engaging in this trend because some find it offensive, where would it end? Like I personally find certain aspects of Christianity offensive but I’d be pretty horrified if he decided to put a blanket ban on Christians for example.
