    I didn't hear the comment of course, so I can't use tone to decide among these options; but I wonder if your passer-by could have been referring to the person you were giving to, or could have been using that five-letter word in the opposite way, to mean something more like amazing. That second option may be rarer but I'm pretty sure I've heard it done. Not sure about in the UK though.
