I finally got the "reserve username" prompt and reserved mine just now. Sadly the one I wanted most was already taken. When this really goes live, I hope people remember to double-check username guesses before firing off messages because of this possibility lol.

Oh isn’t that annoying. You join a WhatsApp group you start getting random private messages from strangers telling you that they added you to their contacts because they saw you on the group. That has happened to me on several occasions. And that can be rather dangerous because if people are adding you to their contacts then your number becomes part of anything else where they share their contacts.

@Gordon You just described why I avoided Facebook, then Meta, for many years: The fact that they deliberately absorb what they can about everyone referenced by people on their platform, not just everyone who is actually on their platform. Last year I joined WhatsApp to help a Bible group, deciding while I was at it that such practices are by now more universal than unique, like it or not.

Well WhatsApp has been an existence longer and it’s hugely popular. One of the best apps out there for sound quality and everything else is signal, however no one uses that hardly because they’re all on WhatsApp. So this is a good thing that will have usernames because there are so many groups out there and a blind people have a huge presence on WhatsApp and are a m well WhatsApp has been an existence for a long time and it’s very popular. There are over 3 billion people who use WhatsApp, so it’s pretty safe to say that just about anyone you would know is there. So this username gives them an added level of protection and makes it possible for people to join groups they might be interested in and not have to worry about taking that risk of their phone number getting out. We is mmm a lot of people use WhatsApp because it’s absolutely massive. They have over 3 billion people over there, so just about everyone you know is there. So that’s why this username stuff makes a lot of good sense. It’s something they should’ve had years ago. WhatsApp practically connects the world because it’s even more popular in other countries than it is here. A lot of other countries use WhatsApp exclusively for phone service because it’s cheaper to have data in those countries than it is to actually have actual phone service and call people that way.

Yes like Jasmine said, WhatsApp is going to continue working the way that it always has. For example if I have jasmine in my contacts and she has me in her contacts and I joined WhatsApp it’s still going to match us up and show us that we can actually contact each other on WhatsApp. But the usernames will allow you to take that a step further. If you want someone to be able to communicate with you on WhatsApp, you could tell them out here in the comments section if you wanted to what your username is or give it out on a Facebook group or anything else and they can still reach you but they don’t actually have your phone number unless you choose to give that to them. But the groups are the big thing with WhatsApp. When you join a group especially one that has a lot of people, you have no idea who all is in that group. If there happens to be a creepy weirdo in a group that you’re in they automatically have your phone number just because you’re in the same group together and they can contact you outside of WhatsApp.
