We have one English word, "love," for several different things. The one that sometimes looks capable of causing, or being, madness is the one we usually call "being in love," but is more specifically sometimes called "limerence," ever since the word was coined in a 1979 book by psychologist Dorothy Tennov. That's the one where you desperately desire another person to feel the same way about you. That can certainly strain the brain but, I would say, does not itself cause madness. It can drive you to do unfortunate things, or it can drive you to make yourself a better human, depending on other elements of your character.

hi Skye Violet. Yep long time no talk, but I agree with you pretty much. I think love is pure and trusting and good but I don't think it involves what you were calling the obsession that makes people go crazy but they're in that obsession is there that's when love becomes wild and out of hand. Can't get obsessed it's destructive. I agree with you love is not what drives them crazy

good post Doug Lee. I don't believe I've ever heard of the word Limerence, but it certainly does express a lot. Thanks. I'll keep that in mind when I'm discussing this issue in the future.
