  Take a bowl and fill it with 2 cups of white vinegar and place it on the top rack and then run the dishwasher

  As you mentioned, it can depend on the model. If you’re having trouble removing the filter, but I would recommend is to run the dishwasher first on a hot cycle with white vinegar. Get a half gallon of white vinegar and pour one to 2 cups in a bowl turned up on the top rack and run the dishwasher to clean everything out before you try to get the filter out
