I've been in both, and it really depends on the commitment of both individuals as to whether an LDR can work. I was in one for about 7 years on paper, though it died quite a bit earlier and I wasn't ready to leave. However, I'm starting to recognize that had we both been different people, it might have worked better. So while local is lovely for the reasons already stated, I might be open to LDR again with the right person. I have someone I'm very close to who is long distance, but we're not dating. And while there are times when it would be nice to see him, I'm appreciating what we do have.
