🚨 FOLLOW-UP: What in the 504 Segregation?! Just to be clear: nobody passed a new rule saying disabled people have to be separated tomorrow. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act is a federal civil rights law protecting disabled people from discrimination in federally funded programs and services. Part of that protection supports receiving services in the most integrated setting appropriate — meaning disabled people should be able to live, learn, work, and receive support in the community whenever possible. The concern is that weakening these protections could make it easier for systems to move toward more separate or institutional settings instead of community-based services. So when disability advocates talk about segregation, we’re talking about the direction this could move disability policy — away from integration, choice, and community care. ♿️ Integration matters. 🏡 Community care matters. 🗣️ Choice matters.
