Molly Burke is annoying because she makes blindness content for a sighted audience and it shows, but I don't think her appearance has anything to do with anything. People don't watch her because they think she's hot, they watch her because they think she's inspiring and/or interesting. That's her whole gimmick. She would be successful whether she was the prettiest woman or the most busted. And I don't know why she couldn't get a sighted boyfriend. Attraction is so subjective. Maybe she found a man who likes blind girls with bad eyebrows and weird teeth. They're definitely out there.

yes, Lord London, you hit the nail on the head. That is exactly why I have an issue with her. Blind people have advocated and fought so hard for equality and we are still fighting. There are still employers that don’t want to hire a blind people. It is so much harder to get a job when you are blind then when you are excited, and I would know, because I’ve worked with hundreds of clients as a VR counselor. And then, someone like Molly Burke comes along, and promotes stereotypes and misconceptions about blindness, intentionally, for personal gain, and I do not respect that, especially when there are ways to earn wealth through doing good and the saddest part of it is, that sometimes, some blind people, actually buy into her stereotypes. They internalize the misconceptions. That is just not an ethical way to make money and I don’t care how much money she makes, wrong is wrong.

I was talking to my 11-year-old son the other day, and he said mom, when I grow up, I wanna make a lot of money, and I told him, don’t do anything bad to get money. I said, we are living in a society where people are turning to underhanded ways of making money. I told him, I would rather see you poor, and have character, then rich, and have no character. I told him, tainted money, corrupts everything it touches. Imagine, building a beautiful gorgeous mansion with radioactive bricks. You wouldn’t want that would you? Tainted money is radioactive, it makes people sick, and believe me, that taint will touch you as well. It’s unavoidable.

Because she did the work. Sure she has sighted folks all around but she still did it and does it. When I check out her videos I see her advocating for blind centric things and I am glad for that.

And this whole Blind-centered advocacy bit: When was the last time you actually saw a blind person in the trenches doing the work featured on anything of hers? Talk is extra cheap when you have the buzz words ready to go. Show me the real deal and then I might take you seriously... And no, vids with Stevie Wonder tooling around at CSUN do not count.
