Praying for you, Savannah. Even through grief, there is still Jesus.

To me forgiveness, biblically speaking, is to always forgive no matter what the wrong is. I have to take into account the scale on which I have offended God and how he has forgiven me, which probably doesn't compare to anything anyone else can do to me in this lifetime. Jesus said forgive 70 times 7 times and beyond,, or something like that. Yes, practicing it can prove challenging. And of course we have to use our common sense; i.e., don't make yourself vulnerable to abuse, etc. What I mean is people can take your willingness to forgive as a sign of weakness, or they can hold against you your offenses against them and guilt trip you.

@Spiritual Angel: As far as your "bad track record" as you call it staying with you for the rest of your life, yes that's part of being human. I don't think anyone comes to the end of their life having no regrets. But maybe you can use it to your advantage as a benchmark that can guide your future actions and plans that way you don't repeat the same mistakes. Years from now you'll see things differently, and your so-called track record will just be another part of your story, the bigger and fuller story. Remember the commandment to love your neighbor as yourself, flaws and all.
