One of the funniest things to watch is a person who is going to an NFB convention for the very first time. I knew a person who was the first time convention attending the year that they were in New Orleans and they were promised a Cajun cuisine. But at the end of banquet she said it was the best catered chicken she ever had and she was excited and enthusiastic and her spirits were way up and she was chanting the NFB songs all the way home. Lol

Well they try to package the NFB as if it's this place for great fellowship and teamwork. But at the end of the day it's really just a cult like atmosphere. It divides them from the rest of the blind people living in the world.

I was talking to an individual one time who was 23 years old and did not know how to use a can opener. So I literally had to walk this individual through the process and it just seems so weird.

Yes it was kind of funny when I went down to the blind school because everything they were teaching down there I had been doing since before kindergarten. I've known several adults who didn't even know how to tie their shoes, but I learned how to do that probably around the age of three or so. Shame on the parents for not teaching their kids the same thing they taught their side kids at a younger age. It's really a shame that we actually need these stupid NFB training centers because this is all stuff that you should've been learning at home.

Regarding the "Me Too" stuff, the current leadership definitely has to be held accountable, especially when they pretend like they didn't know about it. They grew up in the NFB. I joined the NFB about 11 years ago as an adult when I went to my first convention, and I heard about a lot of the bullshit that was taking place probably the first or second day.

A lot of the people complaining are acting as though they have no agency, especially if they got involved with the NFB as an adult. I can understand if they were exposed to some shit as a kid, but as an adult, you gotta take some responsibility for your own actions and choices.
Capitan Slap A Hoe
Also, adults who attend NFB events are not compelled to do anything unless they're there on the NFB's dime. So, if you don't want to participate in the cult shit, you don't have to, very simple.

I'm confused; if the training centers are so terrible, why did you go? As far as I know, no one is forced to go there.

Wow, that’s totally wild, none of y’all know, blind history.

You'll be happy to know, Blind Inc was closed. As soon as you said train tracks, I knew that's what you were talking about.

Well if you're eligible for an upgrade, you could always look at the iPhone 16e. That is a really good solid phone and it's currently Apple's budget model at $599. Actually that phone will probably be a hot selling item this Christmas because it seems that the previous years models are the ones that sell the fastest around Christmas time. The 17th is a good phone, so you could always get that one if you can, but the 16 is just as good. That's both the 16 and the 16E

I guess it could be said that the NFB has done some good with the various attention they've raised when it comes to blindness and accessibility. But at the end of the day is the trade-off really worth it. They could probably be a lot more effective and get a lot more done if they had a more normalized strategy about it all.

Towards the end code factory started doing phone number verification for your license. So you can install mobile speak on your new phone for free, but if for some reason you ever needed to change your phone number that would cost you $100 to move your license over. I had the T-Mobile Dash 3G for my Windows mobile phone. And then the beginning I had the first T-Mobile dash. Both of those phones had the full keyboard on the front. But she really couldn't do anything with those phones because they hardly had any memory and no processor to speak of. They were only good for very very basic web browsing, calls and text and maybe a couple of games. I never was even able to get mine to play Internet radio stations because there just wasn't enough processing power to do it. And talk about bad battery life, those windows mobile phones were absolute battery hogs.

The NFB has a very cult like mentality. It's either their way or the highway. I've listened to both NFB general sessions and ACB general sessions. It really seems to me that the ACB seems to be better well organized. The NFB just makes such a spectacle out of themselves with all of their stupid songs and just a lot of other things they do publicly. And their president seems like he can barely read Burrell. Have you ever heard one of his speeches, he should just do an AI clone of his voice and let the AI clone do the speeches. Maybe he could hire Fred to work with him on the voice inflection so that it would sound like him when the AI model is reading the speech.

Living in the UK, I’ve always been vaguely fascinated by the concept of the NFB as an organisation founded by blind people and design specifically for the blind. We don’t have anything like that in the UK, we have charities which were originally set up by sighted people which don’t offer as much formal training. I used to think their rules and regulations were a bit stuffy and out of touch but as I learn more about the NFB scandals and cover-ups of sexual abuse it does make me wonder if small niche communities are able to self police themselves, it reminds me of some of what happens at fantasy and science-fiction conventions where people are encouraged not to report abuse to the police within the tight knit group for fear that it will lead to the end of the convention.
