I stopped doing phone systems several years back because the phone companies are so unpredictable these days. They consider those premium rate numbers and if they feel like it they’ll give you a warning but if they’re not in a good mood, you’ll simply get a letter in the mail telling you that your service is being terminated and they’ll provide you with the date that it’s being terminated. T-Mobile will tell you ahead of time that you will be billed one penny per minute because it’s a chatline, but Verizon I’ll just let you call until they get tired of it and once you’ve racked up enough minutes or traffic pumped enough you’ll get that letter in the mail sometimes. And then occasionally you’ll run into people that said they’ve never had a problem.

Phone companies used to not be so strict about this, but then regular individuals started getting paid for running their own chatlines and they would three-way their phones out there when they went to sleep, encourage their friends to call and park their phone in a room before they went to sleep or before they went out for the day. So the phone company finally said we’re not doing this anymore. So I had a good strong seven years on my tele space, but it was after that that average people could get their own chat room and they had minute requirements of how many minutes they had to run and things like that so they would do whatever they had to do to pump that traffic. And that totally ruined the experience especially when it comes to cell phone companies.

Wasn’t there a blind guy that lived in Canada who ran all the 712 chat lines and made money off those 712 numbers those 712–432 numbers

Yes, that guy was Wayne in Canada and he really ruined the whole experience for people. He was at the top like I was with our own systems, but he decided to pay anyone who wanted to run a chat room on his lines. So I think that he would pay like a half a cent per minute and you had to run at least 100,000 minutes to get paid anything. So for just a regular person they would have to get their friends to three-way phone lines in there and let their phone stay parked in a room while they were sleeping. So this meant that a lot of those people would just sit there and use 50 or 60,000 minutes per month on each one of their phone lines. With my system I was only one person, so I went with quantity. I would have anywhere from 150 to 200 people on there at night so I didn’t have to encourage people to sit out there all day. And I ran close to 4 million minutes a month or more doing that.

It wasn’t that company who decided to stop that, it was Amazon because that kind of stuff was costing them and there were a lot of lawsuits to keep from having to pay and everything else. This is the reason that Verizon has shut people down before is because people would three-way their stuff and just let it sit all day and all night. You would go into a room and there would be 27 people in the room would be completely silent. People would go by prepaid phones, three-way them into the conference lines so they were on there twice and then set a timer for four hours to let them know to reset the phones. So yes, the phone companies caught on pretty quickly and shut that kind of stuff down for the most part.

I'm confused. Do you text or call this number? What is the number anyways?

Well the phone companies definitely care because that kind of stuff cost them a fortune. Before the average person started to get paid people were still calling conferences but it was only one phone line per person and they were hanging up when they were finished. When everybody started getting paid that’s when you started having enormous amounts of minutes for one customer being used and things like that and that’s what really tightened up the restrictions. Nowadays a lot of the stuff is pretty much going away on its own because that little rural area in Iowa that once had its own tiny phone company now has sailor service and Internet and regular phone calls aren’t as necessary these days. So most people in Spencer Iowa now I have cell phones and Internet and Internet phones just like everybody else. And for conferencing needs people are using Internet based services and not picking up actual phone.

But those were definitely the good old days and it definitely kept me going in between jobs. Making money while you’re sleeping is pretty damn sexy. And with my system, it practically ran itself. We put it together in two weeks and that feature was really hot for a lot of years. And I really didn’t have to do anything at all since I didn’t moderate it heavily. The only thing I had to do was help people with their accounts if they were having issues and answering questions here and there.
